North Sailing offers various kinds of sea tours where whale and nature watching play an important role. Scheduled 3 hours trips, 4 hours trips and an overnight trp to the island of Grímsey are offered as well as tailor-made tours for groups or individuals. We are a leading company in tourism and Icelandic coastal culture and was the first company in Iceland to organise and offer regular whale watching tours. We owns and operate six traditional oak boats which are environmentally friendly and moreover preserve national heritage that otherwise would be lost. The schooners of North Sailing are descendants of the first decked sailing vessels in north Iceland in the 19th century. Schooners, HILDUR & HAUKUR are now the only active vessels of its kind along Icelandic shores. August 2011, we will offer sailing trips onboard schooner HILDUR in East Greenland, along the longest fjord in the world, Scoresby Sund. Adventure through and through.

About our skippers and naturalist guides

We have very specialized and experienced guides which are linked to a PA system for the entire trip. Most of our guides are marine biologist and during the high season we run research about minke whales and dolphis with our research crew. Our priority is our guest’s safety, comfort and pleasure. All safety regulations and demands of the Icelandic Maritime Administration are met and fulfilled. All members of the crew are skilled and experienced; they have all had STCW training at maritime safety and survival training centre in Reykjavik.

Minimal impact on the marine environment
Own research / support for conservation
The crew and wildlife guide were knowledgeable and friendly. They clearly knew the local area and the wildlife well, and had a good understanding of whale behaviour, feeding habits and had a patient unhurried approach to getting the best views for passengers whilst not disturbing the whales. Questions and comments from passengers were welcomed and received positive responses and additional information from the wildlife guide who seemed to enjoy the trip as much as we did. We had fantastic views of humpback whales feeding and fluking and also saw many puffins.
