Mingan Island Cetacean Study (La station de recherche des les Mingan) | Whale & Dolphin Watching

MICS is a non-profit organization that has been conducting long-term studies on Blue, Fin, Minke, and Humpback whales in the Mingan Archipelago for over twenty-five years. Participating in a day trip at sea with our researchers gives you the chance to experience field research first-hand and to meet individual whales, some of whom we have known for over 30 years. As we encounter cetaceans in their natural habitat, MICS researchers will share their knowledge, acquired through more than 30 years of fieldwork in the St. Lawrence, of the species encountered. You can experience our photo-identification, biopsy, acoustic, and behavioural data collection techniques.

Own research / support for conservation
In 2010 and 2011 I joined a session with MICS (one at the Northern Shore at Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan) and another at Gaspé (a Blue Whale Session). Each of these "sessions" were an incredible experience (totally different from the regular whale watching).

We were on the Zodiac for hours, just in the midst of it! There were whales all around us and we could watch the marine biologists take pictures, samples...
The whales (humpbacks, minke, fin...) were so close to the boat and under it, so that we all had our "whale experience moment".

Of course that also means, that a trip with MICS sometimes is not really relaxing and that the biologists´ work has to be done (thus the lower rating on the impact on marine environment)- but that´s understandable because you can whitness the biologists work.
For me, who really is a passionate whale watcher, the trips with MICS have been one of the best trips I´ve done. And they are addictive- I will return this year. :-)
