Dolphin Connection | Whale & Dolphin Watching

We offer incredible holidays in the beautiful setting of the Azores - either swimming with wild dolphins or watching the fantastic variety of whales that visit the islands. Our experienced guides and marine biologists have specialist knowledge of the cetaceans and marine life of the Azores - we have been running the swimming with dolphins programme for over 14 years following a unique ethical code of conduct, ensuring these fascinating creatures are not disturbed in any way.

Our whale watching holidays take place between April and October and include a variety of accommodation options. The Azores is one of the best locations worldwide to see several species of whale: Sperm whales, Blue Whales and Fin whales and many more. Of the 80 species of cetacean that inhabit the planet, 24 species are seen here.

Whale Watching

May and June is the time for the annual migrations of the big whales (fin, sei and the blue whale), but sperm whales and many species of dolphin (bottlenose, Atlantic spotted, striped, Rissos and common dolphins) can be seen year round - you're likely to see large pods of dolphins riding at the bow of the boat. I don't know how to even begin to explain how amazing this company is, our guides are and this experience has been. I have just returned from the best holiday of my life! For over 30 years I have dreamed with an intense passion of the day I may be lucky enough to see a blue whale, that overwhelming pull from the inside of wanting to see one so badly and to see one in the wild with a company and guides who respect first and foremost the whales, dolphins, all animals and the environment.

I spent over a year researching as many companies in as many Countries as I could and luckily I found the absolute best company in an ideal location with amazing guides for a third of the cost of a lot of other places further away.

From start to finish one of our guides Amanda an absolutely lovely and driven lady with an intense passion for whales and dolphins from start to finish made sure we were all included and looked after with regular gatherings and always being there for us for any concerns we had, she was constantly working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure we all had the best possible holiday and Gaynor at Dolphin and Whale Connection completely looked after me from the beginning helping me with flights and any concerns and did with all of our group. The communication via telephone, email, documents and face to face made me feel very safe and secure because I knew everything I needed to know when I needed to know it and could communicate freely.

Feedback is welcomed and ideas taken on board so you really do feel a part of your own experience and of others because your input is valued with Dolphin and Whale Connection who are an extremely forward thinking company all of whom genuinely love and care about whales and dolphins. Our group was absolutely amazing so many different characters from very interesting backgrounds we bonded very well and all wanted the best experiences possible for each other; the atmosphere throughout our holiday was electric.

Our guide Ian Rowlands is I am in no doubt one of the most intelligent and knowledgeable guides and people ever to grace existence; he is an approachable and kind free spirit whose motivation and passion for whales, dolphins, all animals, the environment, life the universe, everything, is infectious. An excellent and interesting character who has dedicated his life to the conservation of these beautiful marine mammals and for twenty years has guided groups around the world to the most remote places having experienced whale and animal encounters we could only dream of.

His focus, awareness and instincts are at the optimum level meaning he is able to use every part of his knowledge and perception with every sense he has combined effectively to place his group in the right place at the right time for many once in a lifetime encounters and thank goodness we were all lucky enough to have him because we all saw three blue whales traveling together not to mention the sei whales, fin whales, sperm whales and various different species of dolphin, flying fish, a turtle and sea birds.

Our boat crew from futurismo were also amazing such lovely, knowledgeable and friendly people who go out of their way to ensure everyone has every possible chance of seeing everything at a safe and respectful distance within all environmental guidelines.

Our hotel was absolutely fantastic the gym, two pools, the rooms and continental and buffet breakfast at the restaurant all excellent, the location was ideal a short walk from the Marina and town centre. Our guides also took us to the best vegetarian restaurant I have ever been to and I have been a veggie for 29 years I really love the island and everything about it, this couldn't have been better I am so happy!!!

I would recommend this company from the bottom of my heart for anyone who wants encounters with some or all of these beautiful marine creatures in a safe environment for them and you…
